Styling your Floral Dresses for Different Looks

by Tina Bryant 31 Jul 2018

The weather is undeniably warmer and it’s the perfect time of year to bust out the bright, bold floral print dresses! There’s nothing more feminine and on-trend than a great floral print dress. But florals aren’t just one thing; there are so many different looks and styles that can put together with florals. Here are some of the ways you can style a floral print look:

For weekend brunches and other events that are halfway between dressy and casual, like a baby shower, family reunion bridal shower, engagement party or any other daytime social gathering, a white floral dress is perfect. It is fun, feminine, flirty and looks great in the sun with a slight breeze, making your hair dance in the wind. A pro tip: Big flowers tend to look great on smaller frames and smaller floral patterns typically flatter fuller shapes.

BREZZY BUNCH BABE

For a late afternoon to evening event that is also semi-dressy, yet semi-casual, a black floral dress is great. Black floral dresses also act like traditional, solid little black dresses by flattering most, if not all, shapes. The flowers give you the breezy daytime feel while the black gives you that chic, nighttime vibe. Both the black and white floral dresses can be paired with metallic jewelry like gold, rosegold or silver. For your daytime events, a great look is to rock beach waves or curls, so every time you catch some wind, it’s the perfect photo opp - this paired with silver or gold hoop earrings looks youthful, on-trend and fun. For your black floral dress worn at a nighttime event, we suggest wearing your hair up; a messy bun or a braided look can look super evening appropriate with small, demure, chandelier or hanging earrings.

OFFICE CHIC

Believe it or not, florals can totally work well in the office setting. If you like to dress chic at work, we suggest a floral skirt like a printed pencil skirt paired with a solid colored, quarter sleeved top. We suggest smooth, neat hairstyles, whether worn up or down. The liveliness of your outfit should be kept to the skirt while everything surrounding it counters the excitement with a neutral color. Jewelry should also be kept smaller and light. Our favorite thing about this outfit is how well it takes you from day to night; so while daytime is all about business; once 5pm hits, you’ll be ready to meet the girls for happy hour cocktails at any posh bar or lounge. A floral midi dress could also work at the office, if the floral print is either partial, sparse, or very small (splashy, big prints are maybe more of a weekend thing).

RESORT AND BEACH LOOKS

Who doesn’t love to get away? If you’re headed to a dreamy resort escape or a caribbean cruise, flowy, wind catching fabrics are the way to go. They’re comfortable and look beautiful in photos. A flowy floral skirt that wraps and features a high waisted silhouette looks amazing with a crop floral top that ties just below the chest. We’re seeing a lot of that deep v plunging neckline with these floral tops that is giving us dreamy tropical vibes! For these looks, you can either do jewelry or not; it doesn’t really matter because the star of the show will be that hibiscus flower in your hair or that piña colada in a pineapple in your hand!

While it may not be beachy or flowy, a floral bodycon dress is another must-have on a cruise or resort vacation; You’ll need a dressy yet tropical dinner look, after all. Dinner looks or formal events are the perfect place for this particular silhouette. If you’re taking the whole family on your vacay, rocking a beautiful floral bodycon dress and then finding a matching dress for your daughter could make for a memorable dressy moment and photo opp!

MUSIC FESTIVAL WEAR

If florals were only allowed in one place ever, that place would definitely be music festivals. At this year’s Coachella, for example, we couldn’t stop spotting florals everywhere we looked! It’s the quintessential flower child look that symbolizes freedom of expression, joy and creativity. One look that was definitely trending were the floral print pants. Whether they were big prints or small, vivid colors like yellow and red served as the backdrop to beautiful flowers on billowy, oversized boho pants. These were almost always paired with a form fitting crop top to counter the loose fit of the pant. Some looks featured contrast, with a solid color up top while others were seen pairing the matching fabric from the pants with a tight halter top, deep plunged v wrapped top or other strappy or wrap tied blouses.

When it comes to jewelry to go with your floral music festival outfit, let your imagination go wild and wear those beautiful pieces that feel like ‘too much’ for anywhere else! Literally anything goes. Some of the most interesting and beautiful jewelry looks at music festivals include boho, almost gypsy-like jewelry. Pieces like ring/bracelet hand chains in silver or gold or studded with rhinestones, or draped head chains with sparkly embellishments look great at festivals and play up the feminine, free vibe that comes with wearing floral prints!
